“Spruce’s Halo” is a 13 year old, 16hh bay thoroughbred mare. After a very successful race career and several years as a broodmare for the track, Spruce is trying out a job as a sport horse broodmare. She’s a cute thing at 16 hh, toe-flipping mover with a fuzzy little mustache. Despite her small stature, she has great bone and a powerful shoulder – a truth that is not immediately obvious until you climb aboard and realize just how much power she really has. The thoroughbred sires in her pedigree known for producing athletic, successful sport horses are Prince John (Princequillo), and Halo (Turn-To).
It is worth mentioning, by the way, that after a career on the track where she earned about $50,000, and a broodmare career wherein she produced 5 foals in 8 years and lost a tangle with a barb wire fence, Spruce is still barefoot and sound as a bell – even in regular work. Some horses are just built to last.
